In the 118th Session, the Philosoph had two teams competing in the final of the Inter-Universities Debating Competition, sponsored by the Irish Times (now known as the Irish Times Debating Competition). Michael Fitzgerald and James McCarron won the semi-final speaking on the motion "That we are Vulgar, Ignorant and Happy". Mr. Oliver Lyons BA Auditor Emeritus, chaired the semi-final round, which was held at the Dairy Science Lecture Theatre, UCC.
