Cathal Goulding, Sinn Féin & IRA Chief of Staff

Apparently Dan McCarthy received the first standing ovation at the Philosoph for some time, precipitated, according to the Irish Times, by the words "In order to lead you not only have to see the light, but to feel the heat."
The Irish Times also notes the "amusing choice" of the proposed chair for this debate citing Mr Barrett's "antipathy towards U.C.C. and students in general" as the source of amusement.

"Revolt rather than Reform"
22nd November

Proposition Stephen Marks, writer and editor with the journal International Socialism
Opposition Dr. Garret Fitzgerald

Motion defeated by a 5 to 1 ratio.
